It is possible to make bread at home for less than 50 cents a loaf. I use the book, Artisan Bread in Five Minutes a Day by Jeff Hertzberg for the recipe.
The main recipe calls for flour yeast salt and water. I agree with the others that the bread you buy in the grocery store has too many additives and preservatives. If we buy bread, it is directly from a bakery, Big Sky Bread in OKC. But then you are really paying for no fillers and preservatives.
If you google the title of the book, there are may sites that offer a tutorial or recipe for the main bread in the book. I believe it’s also available at the OKC System libraries. If you want to use more whole grain, they have another title too called Healthy Bread in Five Minutes a Day.
On the subject of finding Wheat Berries:
Cattle Tracks is at the OSU-OKC Farmers Market the first Saturday of each month. They have certified organic ground hard wheat and wheat berries available. They grow everything themselves. They also have farm grown beef available too. We have bought from John at Cattle Tracks and have been very happy with everything they offer.
If you can’t make the farmer’s market that weekend, you can also get it through the Oklahoma Food Coop (www.oklahomafood.coop). The Coop is membership sponsored group with a one time membership fee. Each month you can order from various vendors/farms around the state. They deliver to a several locations around the state or have home delivery available for an additional fee.
Another way to get wheat berries is through Azure Standard. With Azure standard, you order what you want and then it’s drop shipped. I know there are several drops in the OKC area, but I’ve never used it.
When it comes to grinding wheat berries, a friend of ours uses her blender (Vitamix) to grind. So if you have a blender that is strong enough, you won’t need a grinder for small scale bread making.
On bread machines:
That Artisan bread in 5 Minutes recipe doesn’t need a bread machine. It is a no knead recipe. I gave away my machine because it took up too much space in my kitchen and these recipes don’t require one.
