Growing Grubs – composting + free chicken food!
A dear Haitian missionary friend introduced this amazing idea for sustainable living. In short people are using black solider flies to lay eggs, grow grubs, make compost for the garden and feed chickens automatically! They eat all the kitchen leftovers (as well as composting poo), grow and get fat and big, then some find their way out of the bin and into the chickens mouth.
We’ll probably be getting them ourselves when we can afford the initial set-up plan or when Caine can create one himself. But we don’t have any peace about feeding them manure, not if we’re going to feed them to the chickens we eat… we have enough food leftovers to keep them growing big and strong, lol.
“Free” ongoing, automatic feeder and organic chicken food, imagine that!
It seems that the black solider flies are specifically sought after for this job… not any fly will do!
