4 Tips Every Homeschooled Kid Should Know

It doesn’t take being homeschooled to know that feeling when you sit down, barely awake, trying to grasp some impossible concept that just won’t drill itself into your mind. But for us homeschoolers, we have a few options that can help us to reach our full potential and work a lot faster so we can reach our goals much quicker.

1) Environment is key

When we’re working on school assignments, and are struck with mind blocks and a lack of good ideas, a lot of that has to do with what’s happening around us and where we are. If you’re in a distracted or uncomfortable area, your mind won’t focus and you will become frustrated and fidgety. Sometimes, this is due to feeling closed in. Try choosing a place that is more open and gives you space to think, like outside in a nice quite spot, or somewhere away from everyone else where you can form a cohesive thought.

2) Be consistent

I’ve been through the problem of going through a horrible time learning a concept I hated, only to have to do it again because of leaving it alone for too long. Do yourself a favor and keep practicing. The more you do it, the more familiar it becomes to you. Also, I found that when I explained concepts to others, I grasped it more myself. It’s almost like singing lyrics to yourself and realizing you know more of the song then you thought.

3) Make sure you understand

If there’s one thing you should never do, it’s rush through a concept. You’ll be doing yourself more harm than good on so many levels. If you absolutely hate a certain subject (math for me) then the very thought of having to go back and do the whole thing again is terrifying enough to get it right the first time and learn the subject properly. Sit down, read, take in, ask questions, and understand.

4) Never lose hope

In a society that scoffs upon traditional values, sometimes being homeschooled can be rough. I mean that in the sense of people seeing you differently because you are homeschooled, or personally, feeling you have something to prove so people think about you a certain way. And let’s not forget the annoying questions every homeschooled eighteen year old kid gets asked because, according to society, they should be done: “Are you graduated yet?” “Are you gonna move out now?” ” What subjects did you study?” “Can you tell me what this equation and that equation is?”. It really boils down to having faith and truly believing that God has a plan for you. And forget about what other people think, they have NO IDEA what your situation is and have probably never dealt with the things you may be dealing with. Set goals for yourself, work hard, and pray that God will see you through your journey and help you achieve your desires.
