The old folk song, “I gotta mule, her name is Sal’. Fifteen miles on the Erie Canal;” was in fact a song dedicated to the lives of merchants and bargeman who made a living by driving horses, oxen, and yes, mules along the Erie Canal. The Erie Canal was built in hopes of making New York, the “Empire State” around 1817.
