In 1836, two families, Henry H. Spalding and Marcus Whitman and their new brides traveled west to establish the Whitman Mission near modern-day Walla Walla, Washington. The wives, Narcissa Whitman and Eliza Hart Spalding became the first European-American women to cross the Rocky Mountains.
